Volleyball heads to Hawaii for the first two rounds
GREELEY – Northern Colorado caught a wave and is riding it to the big island for the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament announced on Sunday night. UNC, the 2019 Big Sky Regular Season and Tournament Champions, will face No. 12 Hawaii in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, December 6 at 7 pm HT/10 pm MT.
"We are pretty pumped to go to Hawaii," Head Coach Lyndsey Oates said. "You can tell by the team's reaction they are excited to not only go to a really fun place but a great environment where they draw well and is a good matchup for us."
The Bears join Washington State and San Diego traveling to Honolulu for the NCAA first and second round.
UNC earned the trip to the NCAA Tournament by winning a thrilling five-set match Saturday night in the Big Sky Tournament over Weber State. This is Northern Colorado's fifth trip to the Division I NCAA Tournament and the second time they will travel to Hawaii. The Bears also went to Hawaii in 2011.
It will be a homecoming for a pair of UNC coaches in Jon Haruguchi and Pi'i Aiu who are both originally from Hawaii.
"It is for sure special to have a homecoming for our two assistants," Oates added. "As a team and staff we were really hoping to go to Hawaii, not just because it's a fun place, but because it will be special to return home for them."
