GREELEY, Colo. – Northern Colorado put up a valiant effort Wednesday, but fell short on Senior Night to Wyoming 28-10. Three Bears grabbed wins in [133] Rico Montoya, [184] Dylan Gabel, and [285] Jack Kuck.
It was a traditional start to the dual, with [125] Trey Andrews kicking things off for the Bears against No. 14 Drew Templeman. Andrews fought hard, but dropped a close bout by the score of 5-1.
At 133 lbs., Rico Montoya won the first match of the night for UNC via major decision against Ronnie Stevens. After a scoreless first period, Montoya got to work in the second.
Stevens chose bottom and escaped quickly, which seemed to ignite the fire in Montoya. Ensuing the escape, Montoya got a takedown off a beautiful sweep single, and started to rack up the points on top. After two quick turns, Montoya saw his lead grow to 6-1 and never looked back.
It was more of the same in the third, as Montoya got an escape and another takedown to pad his lead to 9-1. The final score of the match was 10-2 as Montoya cruised to victory.
The Bears led 4-3 after Montoya's victory, which was the only lead Northern Colorado held during the dual.
The Bears dropped their next five matches.
[184] Dylan Gabel was one of the two other wrestlers to win on the night.
In what was another dominating performance for Gabel, he won 5-0 over Luca Lovelorn.
With solid takedowns and controlling rides on top, Gabel grabbed another Big 12 victory, helping his seeding for the conference and national tournaments.
The last and final Bear to win on the evening was HWT Jack Kuck.
With a huge takedown in the first period, Kuck was able to dictate the pace of the match, and led for a majority of the match.
After an escape form Kuck in the third period, he led 3-2. With methodical hand fighting and great positioning, Kuck was able to snag a 3-2 win and capture his first career dual win as a Bear.
In Their Own Words:
Head Coach, Troy Nickerson
"We fought hard and competed, and at this point that is predominately what we are looking for from the guys. We had some tough matchups, but still need to improve in certain areas. It was especially great to see Jack Kuck get his first home dual win of his career on Senior Night in front of the home crowd. Moving forward, we continue to look to improve and focus on our last two duals, starting with Utah Valley this coming Saturday."
