Flagstaff, Ariz -Â As the WAC Conference Championships looms ever closer, Northern Colorado Swimming and Diving took on the defending champions Saturday morning in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was Northern Arizona, however, who emerged victorious, walking away with the victory, 170-91.
How It Happened
Things started off a bit slowly for UNC, failing to find podium finishes in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, the 100-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard butterfly.Â
Giving new life to the Bears, Sydney Kimura weaved her way into a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle. Kimura's time of 11:19.43 was a mere three seconds from NAU's Claire Hammond.Â
Rolling right off their best event of the meet until that point, freshman, Elizabeth Kneip waltzed to a third place finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Kneip again found the podium in the 200-yard backstroke and was the second leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that closed out the meet with a Northern Colorado victory in the event.Â
In the second long-distance swim of the day, the Bears again flexed their muscles. Karliegh O'Connell touched the wall first with a time of 5:49.32, with her teammate Maya Ahluwalia claiming second officially, witha 6:03.9.
Freshman diver, Allyson Wood continued to impress during her inaugural campaign. Although Wood finished outside the top three in both the 1-meter and 3-meter portions, her 3-meter score of 251.03 was a career best.Â
By the end of the meet, the Lumberjacks had impressively earned another win against a WAC opponent. Both teams will see each other in March at the Conference Championships in Houston, Texas.
Bear of the Meet
Elizabeth Kneip - The freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colorado finished third in both the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley while also contributing to the 200-yard freestyle relay team that won the final event of the meet.Â
Quotable
Assistant Coach, Rachael Mullen
"Due to the timing of the meet this week, we only took about half of our team and challenged them to swim that they don't normally race. These girls embraced the challenge, raced touch and by far were the most spirited team on the deck."
What's Next...
UNC Diving gets set for an invitational at the Air Force Academy on Friday, January 27. Saturday, January 28, both Swimming and Diving will play host to CSU-Pueblo and Nebraska-Kearney for Senior Day and the final home meet for the Bears this season.Â
