8. Women's Soccer Makes History with Season Opening Win.
It was 29 years in the making, but women's soccer finally defeated Colorado College 3-2, in its 2014 season opener at Jackson Field.
This was the first win over the Tigers in program history and the first time since 2010 that head coach Tim Barrera's club started off the season with a win.
Sophomore midfielder Kassy Castillo did most of the damage for the Bears, scoring two out of the three goals and assisting on the third. Both of Castillo's goals came in the first half, in the 14th and 24th minutes.
Freshman forward Brooke Braden scored UNC's third and final goal in the 27th minute on a cross in the box from Castillo.
Colorado College gained momentum in the second half scoring two goals early on, but some stout goalkeeping from sophomore Kaitlin Ruff allowed Northern Colorado to hang on for the win.
For her efforts Castillo took the first Big Sky Player of the Week honors of the season.
In 2015 UNC once again opens the season with Colorado College, but this time on the road.
