Stevens Second In HJ; Lucky 13 Qualify For Finals Tomorrow

MISSOULA, Mont. - During the first day of the 2009 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, the Northern Colorado men's and women's teams are both in ninth place and have qualified 13 for the finals on Saturday.
Junior Rachael Stevens became the team's first all-conference selection of the outdoor season, clearing 5-8.75 in the high jump to finish second.
Colleen Sanderlin finished sixth in the 10,000 meters, while Erin Apsey finished eighth, clocking in at 39:49.10 and 40:02.95, respectively to earn the team four points.
Senior Patrick Berg finished seventh in the discus with a throw of 154-6 and was eighth in the hammer with a toss of 165-8 to earn the Bears three points.
Sophomore Terrence McGaughy qualified for the finals in the 100 meters, posting the second fastest time in the day at 10.85, while junior Garrett Kidd qualified seventh in 11.02. McGaughy also qualified fourth in the 200 meters after running a 21.67.
Junior Tyler Hoerner won the second heat of the 400 meters, qualifying for the finals in 47.46, while freshman Dan Larson ran a 1:52.84 in the 800 meters to advance to Saturday's final.
Tyler Short posted the fastest time in the day in the 400 meter hurdles, running a 53.27, while Marty Wittmer (54.36) and Joe Pummer (54.64) also qualified into tomorrow.
Junior Justine Sandersfeld won the first heat of the 400 meters in 55.11 leading a trio of Bears into Saturday's finals as freshman Shaylee Robinette (56.77) and Jillian Hoblitt (56.97) also both advance.
Senior Tali Slafter was also victorious, winning the second heat of the 100 hurdles in 14.17 and Kelly Coomes grabbed the final qualifying spot after timing a 14.39.
The Bears conclude competition at the conference championship at the University of Montana on Saturday.
