Football Has Three Named To Second-Team All-Conference

OGDEN, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado football team had three student-athletes named to the 2009 All-Conference Second Team. The Bears also had six earn honorable mention honors it was announced by the Big Sky Conference office on Tuesday.
Junior cornerback Korey Askew, junior linebacker John Eddy and senior punt returner Ryan Lutz were all named to the Second Team by the league's coaches.
Askew finished third on the team with 74 total tackles and he tied for the team lead with three interceptions with a best 112 return yards. Askew also had two fumble recoveries for 41 yards and a team-best nine pass break ups.
Eddy was second on the team with 80 total tackles and led the club with 5.5 sacks, playing in just eight of the team's 11 games. He also had a team-best four forced fumbles and recorded four quarterback hurries on the year. Eddy was also a second-team pick during the 2007 season.
Lutz ranked among the conference leaders all season in punt return yardage, averaging 7.0 yards per return over 21 returns. He also notched 47 tackles as a defensive back with three pass break ups and one sack. Last year, Lutz was an honorable mention pick.
Earning honorable mention honors are center Alex Shapiro, wide receiver Alex Thompson and quarterback Bryan Waggener on offense and defensive end Nick Hernon, safety Max Hewitt and linebacker Matt King on defense.
Shapiro started all 11 games at center for the Bears, missing just part of the game at Montana.
Thompson led the team with seven touchdowns and had 71 catches for 864 yards to rank among the best all-time receivers in Northern Colorado history.
Waggener completed 231-of-385 passes on the year for 2,410 yards and nine touchdowns for an average of 209.1 yards per game and became one of just five quarterbacks in school history to tally more than 5,000 passing yards in a career. This is his second award.
Hernon was second on the team with 5.0 sacks and 1/8 of his tackles were for loss as he notched 48 tackles on the season. He also led the Bears with eight quarterback hurries.
Hewitt is a two-time honorable mention selection. This year, he finished tied for third on the team with 74 tackles and tied for the team lead with three interceptions. Hewitt also forced one fumble and had three pass break ups.
King led the Bears with 91 total tackles. He also recorded six tackles for loss and three sacks, which was good for third on the team. King started all 11 games, taking over for two-time all-league pick Cristian Sarmento.
The Bears ended the season with a 3-8 mark and were 1-7 in Big Sky Conference play.
