UNC hosts the No. 3 team in the nation on December 18th
GREELEY, Colo.- Fans at Bank of Colorado Arena will get the opportunity to watch Northern Colorado take on the third-ranked team in the nation on Dec. 18 when they host Oklahoma State. The matchup marks the first home and Big 12 dual for UNC this season.

Oklahoma State is off to a strong start this season with a dominating win over sixth-ranked Minnesota, 30-3. The Cowboys also had wins over North Carolina (25-9) and North Dakota State (40-3) to improve to 3-0 on the season.

Oklahoma State boosts a ranked wrestler in nearly every weight class according to trackwrestling.com. The rosters including top ranked Dean Heil at 141 lb., fourth-ranked Nick Piccininni at 125 lb, third-ranked Kaid Brock at 133 lb, and fourth-ranked Preston Weigel at 197 lb.

Northern Colorado wrestling started its 2017-18 season at the Cowboy Open and four Bears be returned to Greeley as champions including Rico Montoya [133], Tyler Kinn [157], Jacob Seely [197] in the elite bracket. Jordan Robinson competed unattached and won the amateur bracket for the 157 lb weight class. Along with the four champions, Keilan Torres [165], Jimmy Fate [149], and Macoy Flanagan [157] placed in the tournament.Â

As hosts of the Northern Colorado Open the next weekend, UNC wrestling had a strong showing on its home mat at Bank of Colorado Arena. UNC had three champions, with Seely once again bringing home the title. Fate and Dylan Gabel [184] both won their respective weight classes, with Fate winning his first title as a Bear.

UNC would take a few weeks off and then travel to Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational. The tournament is considered one of the most difficult in the nation, with almost half of the top 25 teams participating.

Seely and Fate would both advance to the second day of competition in Las Vegas. Seely defeated seventh-ranked Jeric Kasunic from American University. Fate would lose his first match on the second day to bow out of the competition. Seely pulled off another upset to start his second day of competition; this time over third-ranked Kevin Beazley from Michigan. The competition was cut short for Seely after he suffered an injury that ended the match. Seely placed eighth in the 197 lb weight class.

In the first dual of the season, UNC fell to Northwestern 24-20 despite winning five matches on the day. Northwestern won by surpassing UNC on bonus points in the matches they won. Torres won his match with a pin and Sethan Bogulski [174] had an impressive tech fall to give the Wildcats all they could handle at the end of the dual.

UNC looks to get back to its winning ways when they host Oklahoma State on Monday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m.

The schedule this season features eight exciting home matches including national powers Oklahoma State, Duke and West Virginia.
