Carleigh Silvers within range of top five at Cowgirl Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Northern Colorado Women's Golf shot a 21-over par 309 Tuesday to put itself in 17th place after the second round of the 2012 Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Ocotillo Golf Resort.
The Bears' effort Tuesday gives them a two-round score of 615 (+39) and leaves them just two shots behind a four-way tie for 13th and four shots back of 11th-place New Mexico State.
The tournament concludes with Wednesday's third round.
"Unfortunately, we didn't play that great today," Northern Colorado head coach Brandon White said. "We didn't really show up with our best game. We had a little bit of everything. Unfortunately those little mistakes today cost us about six places in this field."
Bears junior Carleigh Silvers shot a 3-over 75 in round two, bringing her overall score to 149 (+5) and putting her in a tie for 15th -- just three strokes behind Sacramento State's Julie Shutler, who sits in fourth.
Northern Colorado senior Ali Nelson played her last eight holes 2-under par, helping her overcome a slow start to finish with a 4-over 76 on the day. Nelson is 8-over for the tournament and in a tie for 38th.
"[Nelson's play] was a big savior for us today," White said.
Senior Chelsea Silvers continued her strong play of late, matching Nelson's 76 on Tuesday. She is just one shot behind her teammate, overall, with a two-round score of 153 (+9). She started fast, shooting 1-under through the first eight holes, before giving a few shots back on the back nine.
"It's really good to have Chelsea Silvers play a couple better rounds," White said. "She's one of our seniors that we're going to be counting on this time of year to step up and play good in the [Big Sky] Conference Championship."
White praised the efforts of the other two members of the team this week, as well. Junior Libby Avery shot a 10-over 82 Tuesday, and junior Hannah McNeley carded an 85 (+13).
"Hannah McNeley has been playing the majority of her rounds very well," White said. "She made a little mistake that compounded into a big number today, which hurt her a little bit. Libby Avery has also been right on the verge of shooting some good scores."
