POCATELLO, Idaho – Both the 5000 meter and distance medley relay records were broken on the women's side as the Northern Colorado track & field teams began their run at the Big Sky Indoor Championships on Friday on the campus of Idaho State.
Sophomore Megan Horsch timed a 17:59.01 to finish eighth in the 5000 meters and break the school record on the way. Horsch betters the record of 18:07.77 by Kellie Callahan from a year ago at the Big Sky Championship.
In the distance medley relay, the quartet of Denise Kintzley, Keira Kohls, Sari Little and Noel Wees finished seventh. The quartet crossed the finish line in 12:12.31, shattering the school record of 12:43.06 by the 2002 team of Hostetler-Farris, Baker, Schlageck and Ernst.
In just her second-ever pentathlon, senior Kelly Coomes finished seventh in the pentathlon with 3,354 points giving the Bears two team points.
Coomes started the pentathlon finishing third in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.79 for 954 points. She then tied for second in the high jump, clearing 5-1.75 for 701 points, bringing her total to 1655 as she took the lead by two points over Montana's Lindsey Hall. Coomes just missed her personal best in the shot put, throwing 32-0.25 to tie for eighth and amass 514 points. She also tied for eighth in the long jump after a leap of 16-9.25 for 589 points. In the final event, the 800 meters, Coomes timed a 2:38.02 for 596 points for her 3,354 total.
Coomes also qualified for the finals in the 60 meter hurdles, timing an 8.82 in the prelims, finishing second in the second heat, not long after finishing the pentathlon.
Sophomore Natasha Bruins also scored two team points with her seventh place finish in the long jump. Bruins had a leap of 18-3.25 to double the team points on day one.
Sophomore Evan Taylor qualified for Saturday's finals in the 60 meters, timing a 6.89 for a new career best time, which is the third-fastest in school history. Taylor's time is a 0.03 improvement over his previous career-best time of 6.92 from earlier this year at the Potts Indoor Invitational.
Taylor also qualified with the top time in the 200 meters, running a 21.61, just off his season-best time of 21.59.
The men's distance medley relay team of Jason Kearns, Matt Robbins, John McCarthy and Derek Schneider finished ninth with a time of 10:57.36.
Sophomore Ashley Foster took the final qualifying spot in the women's 60, running a 7.75 for a personal best time. Foster also grabbed the final qualifying spot in the 200 meters, timing a 25.27.
Senior Justine Sandersfeld will also compete on Saturday after qualifying for the finals in the 400 meters. She clocked a 57.05 to grab the eighth and final spot.
