Opening Tip
Kristen Mattio makes her head coaching debut for the Blue and Gold. In seven seasons at the helm of West Texas A&M, Mattio collected 154 wins. Under her direction of Mattio, the Lady Buffs won four Lone Star Conference titles, two LSC Tournament titles, a South Central Regional Championship in 2017, she picked up two conference Coach of the Year awards and multiple trips to the Division II Elite Eight.
UNC fans will get a first look at the nine new faces in a Bear uniform this year. Freshmen Emilia Bishop and Averee Kleinhans join transfers Sydney Stensgard, Callie Boyles, Delaynie Byrne, Sabine Lipe, Jayce Gorzeman, Allie Downing and Zoe Campbell.
Mattio welcomes back six players from last season's roster including sophomore standout Hannah Simental. At one point last season, the Pueblo, Colorado native was third in the nation in three-point shooting percentage at over 53 percent.
Senior Alexis Chapman is nine points away from 1,000 in her career. Chapman would be the 22nd Bear to reach the 1,000 club.
Scouting the Rangers
It's a familiar sight for assistant coach Marquelle Dent. Dent spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant for the Rangers after a stellar career up north at Wyoming.
Regis was picked to finish ninth out of the 15 teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Head coach Molly Marin, now in her seventh year in Denver, graduated last year's top scorer in Whitney Jacob. While the Rangers will miss her 16.6 points per game, Marin welcomes the return of Tashika Burrell who mustered 12.9 a game last season. She also returns sophomore Erin Fry. The RMAC Freshman of the year a season ago led the team in assists and poured in a career-high 27 against MSU Denver.
History against Regis
Northern Colorado hasn't played Regis in an official contest since 2004. However, the last time the Rangers were in town for an exhibition in 2019, the Bears took the W, 93-42.
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado officially gets its season underway on the road at Arizona State on November 9. Following a quick stop in Fort Collins versus the Rams on November 12, the Bears' home opener features a battle against UTRGV on November 16, at 6 p.m. MT. Tickets can be purchased at UNCBears.com/Tickets.
