Northern Colorado women's basketball struggled all night offensively, falling to Fordham 48-33
BRONX, N.Y – Northern Colorado women's basketball finished its east coast trip on Friday night taking on the Fordham Rams (2-2). The Bears (4-2) offense struggled all game long shooting just 25.5 percent from the field in a 48-33 loss.
Northern Colorado's offense struggled out of the gate, allowing Fordham to jump out to a quick 8-2 lead. The Bears cut the Fordham advantage down to two when Courtney Smith connected on a pair of layups. The Rams built the lead to six by the end of the first quarter, being up 14-8.
The second quarter was the best quarter shooting for UNC after Fordham went on a 7-2 run to go up 19-12 with 3:53 remaining in the first half. Northern Colorado closed the half out on a 6-0 run as Savannah Smith hit a pair of layups to make it 21-18 Fordham at the half. The Bears shot 41.7 percent in the quarter.
For the half, UNC shot 31.0 percent from the field including going 0-for-11 from beyond the arc.
The offensive struggles really kicked in during the second half as the Bears shot just 19.2 percent from the field. Northern Colorado was held to 15 points during the second 20 minutes of play and Fordham took advantage of it with two different runs of 8-0 to put the Bears away.
What They Said
Head Coach Kamie Ethrigde
"It was just a really difficult night for our team right from the beginning. We got some unbelievably great shots early, but could not buy a basket and that hurt our confidence. From then on it was like a snowball going downhill. We just could not get anyone going and panicked a little bit when it happened. You ended up just seeing a team that couldn't shake off the bad offensive night. The biggest thing we can take away from these two games is to remember games like DePaul when we were able to get to the line and found ways to score when shots were not going in. We have the players to do that and have to remember it and grow from this. This team has the ability to bounce back from these two games and grow from this like I expect them to."
Game Changer
G'mrice Davis is Fordham's go-to player and she showed it on Friday. Davis finished with a double-double scoring 14 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. She also had four steals in the game.
Stat to Know
It's hard to win in basketball when you are unable to make a basket. The Bears struggled to find the bottom of the basket Friday night shooting 25.5 percent from the field and hitting on just 1-of-26 (3.8%) 3-pointer. The lone 3 came from Krystal Leger-Walker late in the fourth quarter.
Game Notes
- Savannah Smith and Courtney Smith each finished with 10 points in the game to lead UNC. Savannah Scott grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Bears, with four of them coming on the offensive end.
- The 33 points scored are the lowest in the Kamie Ethridge era. The previous came at Colorado on November 19, 2015, with 41 points.
- UNC scored its second lowest amount of points in program history Friday night. The lowest came in 2008 against Florida State in Cancun when they scored 32 points. The last time a Northern Colorado team did not score over 40 was at Wichita State 12/7/12 (51-35).
What's Ahead?
Northern Colorado returns home to start a three-game homestand on Thursday, November 30 at 7 pm when they host BYU. The Bears will also host Pacific (Dec. 3) and Colorado State (Dec. 10) during the homestand.
