Cross Country Teams Both Finish In Top 12 At UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - In the second meet of the season, the Northern Colorado cross country team headed west to compete at the Asics/UCI Invitational at the Anteater Recreation Center, hosted by UC Irvine.

The men's team finished in 11th place among 21 teams scoring 116 points, while the women were 12th with 239 points.

Chico State won the 21-team race with 36 points, Cal Poly was second at 65 and Fresno State third with 110 points. Cal Poly was the women's team champion with 74 points, Chico State finished second with 84 and Cal State San Marcos third with 121.

"We continue to make good individual improvements," said Head Coach Kevin Galbraith. "It doesn't always show in the team results because there were so many teams but we did run very strong and we're going the right way this early in the season."

Senior Kelly Callahan again led the women's team, finishing the 5K course in 18:32.40 for 24th position. Sophomore Megan Horsch clocked an 18:53.90 for 40th place, while junior Denise Kintzley ran an 18:58.80 to finish 44th. Sophomore Erin Apsey was the next Bear across the tape, finishing 73rd in 19:25.90 and freshman Bridget Tiernan finished four seconds later for 79th to round out the team scoring. Fellow freshman Allie Sojourner timed a 20:29.10 for 113th.

Danny Sojka paced the men's squad, running a 26:50.50 over the eight kilometers for 62nd place. Freshman Ben Wilson was the next Bear to finish, crossing in 71st in 26:58.20 and freshman Matt Nakamoto was 94th in 27:31.80. Dylan Hedges ran a 27:54.80 to place 113th and freshman David McClelland rounded out the team scoring in 128th with his time of 28:20.60. Dan Larson placed 166th after timing a 29:19.00.

The Bears will be back in action next week a little closer to home, running in the Colorado State Classic on Sept. 18 in Fort Collins.
