Volleyball begins title defense with first days of practice

GREELEY – The Northern Colorado volleyball squad kicked off its Big Sky title defense on Wednesday morning when it took the court for its first official practice.
The Bears are coming off a season that saw them clinch their first outright Big Sky regular season title as well as their second Division I NCAA Tournament birth in three years. As a result of last year's regular season championship, the Bears will get to host the 2012 Big Sky Conference Volleyball Championship beginning on Nov. 23.
Before the season begins, Northern Colorado will partake in two weeks of practice. Included in those two weeks is Bears' fans first chance to see this year's squad during the annual Alumni Match at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18.
The regular season kicks off on Friday, Aug. 24 when the Bears travel to Nashville, Tenn. to play in the Belmont Invitational. They will open the tournament against TCU and will also play Belmont and Alabama A&M.
The Bears are coming off one of the most successful seasons in school-history and still return the Big Sky's MVP Kelley Arnold and fellow All-Big Sky performers Andrea Spaustat and Marissa Hughes.
