GREELEY, Colo. -- 143. 89. 7. 35.
Add those numbers together and you've got another successful team camp for the Northern Colorado volleyball program.
Lyndsey Benson and her assistant coaches and players completed their 2008 camp last weekend, and it was a great success for the 143 teams involved from 89 high schools in seven states across 35 courts in the Greeley area.
"Team camp was another huge success this year," Benson said. "It must be one of the biggest team camps in the country."
Summer camps have become a ritual for many of the Northern Colorado athletic programs, but Benson's team camp has become one of the most-attended. The 2008 team camp was so popular that matches were played across 10 area facilities -- Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion, the Butler-Hancock practice gym and UNC Recreation Center, Greeley Recreation Center, Jesus Rodarte Cultural Center, the Family Fun-Plex, Greeley Central High School, Heath Middle School, University High School, Frontier High School and Dayspring Christian Academy.
"With 16 courts on campus alone, we have great facilities to host an event of this size," Benson said. "It's a great way for high school teams to prepare for their upcoming seasons with 13 matches in three days.
"It's also a great way for us to show off what a great place UNC and Greeley are for 143 teams."
The matches this year were played across three divisions. Columbine High took gold honors in Division 1 (65 teams) and Grandview was tops in Division 2 (52 teams). Division 3 featured 26 teams, but no scores were reported to the main desk.
The dates for next year's team camp are July 23-25.
