GREELEY -- Saturday was a perfect day to open Northern Colorado Women's Tennis play at the Butler-Hancock Tennis Courts, but Sacramento State played spoiler while earning a 7-0 win. The Bears (7-7, 5-2 Big Sky) were able to secure a doubles win in the No. 1 spot for the first time against the Hornets.

"Sacramento's a tough team and historically they've been a tough team," Head Coach Brenda Vlasak said. "We really didn't have anything to lose. We were looking at this as an opportunity to just get good match play in and try to make a statement, which we did."

Senior Stephanie Catlin (Basingstoke, England) and doubles partner freshman Beth Coton (Bolton, England) won their seventh doubles match of the season while also helping the Bears earn a doubles win over the Hornets for the first time. The England duo was able to take the win, 8-4. Senior Adriana Nieto (Southlake, Texas) and freshman Courtney Schulte (Austin, Texas) nearly pulled out another doubles win in the No. 3 spot, but fell in the tiebreaker, 8-7 (8-6).

Two singles matches went to three sets while two also played tiebreaker points. Catlin, in the No. 2 singles spot, took her opponent, Alina Soltanici, to three sets after winning the first set on a tie breaker. Soltanici was able to rally in the final two sets to take the win, though, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 7-4. Sophomore Hilary Walters-West (Simi Valley, Calif.) nearly won her first set in the No. 4 spot by a tiebreaker, but fell in both sets 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Coton was able to comeback in the No. 6 spot while forcing a third set. The third set went Sacramento State's way, though, in the 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 loss.

"[Moving forward we'll] use this as a confidence boost because we don't look at it as a negative," Vlasak said. "Yeah we lost, but we fought in every single match and we'll learn from it going forward."
