Women's Tennis falls for first time in Big Sky play
SEDONA, Ariz. -- The Northern Colorado women's tennis team faced its first defeat in Big Sky Conference play on Wednesday as Northern Arizona won, 5-2. Three singles matches went to tiebreaker points while the Bears (7-6, 5-1 Big Sky) won three total matches on the day.
Two freshman for the Bears recorded the only singles matches wins while another helped win the No. 3 doubles match. Head Coach Brenda Vlasak's team had won eight of the last nine doubles series coming into Wednesday's match.
"It was a really rough, heartbreaking day and we should have won the doubles point," Vlasak said. "For some reason the nerves got the best of our players today. We put a little more pressure on ourselves than we should have."
Freshmen Laura Wehner (Richard, New Zealand) and Beth Coton (Bolton, England) won the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, for the Bears. Wehner went to three sets, falling in the second in a tiebreaker, to win 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 10-4. Coton was able to sweep Tatum Rochin 6-2, 6-4.
"I am positive the girls will bounce back from this and use this match as inspiration to move forward and beat everyone else in the Big Sky," Vlasak said. "Regardless of the outcome today, I am proud of how hard we fought in singles and almost pulled through."
If weather permits, the Bears will open play at the Butler-Hancock Tennis Courts in its next action. Northern Colorado will host Sacramento State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29.
