Women's Tennis nearly sweeps Eastern Washington, 6-1
GREELEY – The Northern Colorado women's tennis team came into the weekend rolling and continued with its fifth win in six matches against Eastern Washington on Saturday, 6-1. The Bears (5-4, 4-0 Big Sky) remain undefeated in conference play and haven't allowed two points in any of its five wins.
"We went out today and played steady tennis," Head Coach Brenda Vlasak said. "When we got down the girls stayed calm and found a way to fight back. I'm proud of our determination and fight today."
The Bears nearly swept the Eagles both in the final score and in both singles and doubles, but fell in both No. 1 spots. Each of the other singles matches finished in straight sets.
"Adriana Nieto (in the No. 1 singles spot) really played her heart out and played some of the better tennis I've seen her play," Vlasak said. "She can compete with every number one player and continues to get better match by match."
Senior Stephanie Catlin (Basingstoke, England), sophomore Hilary Walters-West (Simi Valley, Calif.) and freshman Laura Wehner (Richard, New Zealand) all finished the day while continuing their hot streaks. Catlin and Walters-West have now won five of their last six matches while Wehner has won six of her last seven.
"Hilary (Walters-West) really impressed me today," Vlasak said. "She was determined from start to finish and had a convincing win over a good player."
Catlin and freshman Beth Coton (Bolton, England) nearly took the No. 1 doubles match, falling just short though, 8-6. Junior Chrissie Hoolahan (Richmond, Surrey, England) and Wehner were on the other side of that score, winning the No. 2 spot, 8-6. Rounding out the doubles wins was senior Adriana Nieto (Southlake, Texas) and freshman Courtney Schulte (Austin, Texas) who swept their opponents, 8-0. Hoolahan and Wehner have now won five of their last six matches together while Nieto and Schulte have won three in a row.
Northern Colorado will hit the road for the first time since opening the season against Colorado on Jan. 24. The Bears will head up to Laramie, Wyo., to hit the court against the Cowgirls of Wyoming with first serve set for 12 p.m.
