Women's Tennis continues undefeated Big Sky start against Idaho State

Collin Boyles

The Northern Colorado women's tennis team faltered just once on Sunday as Idaho State fell in Greeley, Colo., 6-1, in the Bears' third Big Sky match of the season. Head Coach Brenda Vlasak and her team bounced back from Saturday while winning five singles matches and two doubles matches.

"I am pleased with our win today, however, we made the task at hand a little more difficult than it should have been," Vlasak said. "

The No. 1 doubles match went unfinished, but the Bears snagged the other two doubles wins 8-3 and 8-4. The only match won by Idaho State on the day came in the singles No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-2.

The No. 4 and 5 matches in singles play led to three-set matches, all ending in favor of the Bears. Sophomore Hilary Walters-West (Simi Valley, Calif.) and freshman Laura Wehner (Richard, New Zealand) were able to pull out those matches 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1, 4-6, 13-11, respectively.

"I felt like we had to stick to patient and consistent tennis today and stay in the rallies a lot longer than expected because every ball came back," Vlasak said. "As soon as we gained a little more confidence throughout the match we were able to execute the points and take the lead."

The Bears have now won four of its last five matches including losing just three singles matches and one doubles match in the four wins. UNC will be at home for its next Big Sky match-up against Eastern Washington, but will head to Laramie, Wyo., to face Wyoming a day later.
