Despite two doubles wins, Women's Tennis falls to Wichita State

Collin Boyles

GREELEY – Doubles play continued to be an area of success for the Northern Colorado women's tennis team, but Wichita State came into Greeley, Colo., and swept singles action. The Bears (3-4, 2-0 Big Sky) won two of three doubles matches while the Shockers (6-2) took the team final, 6-1.

"The team was very competitive today across the board against Wichita State," Head Coach Brenda Vlasak said. "We really had a solid performance in our toubles today."

Senior Stephanie Catlin (Basingstoke, England) and freshman Beth Coton (Bolton, England) won their fourth straight doubles match in the No. 1 spot, while senior Adriana Nieto and freshman Courtney Schulte (Austin, Texas) won their first doubles match of the season as a duo.

Catlin/Coton were able to secure the win over Veronika Blaskova and Lucia Kovalova of Wichita State, 8-3. Nieto and Schulte came down to the final points in the tight 8-6 win over Julia Schiller and Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul. The two doubles victories gave the Bears one point towards the team score.

Wichita State swept the singles matches with only one match going into a third set. Freshman Laura Wehner (Richard, New Zealand) won the second set against Montse Blasco Fernandez, 6-2, but ultimately fell in the third set. Her final score line was a 6-3, 2-6, 10-4 loss.

"We are continuing to fine tune some things and the team is responding very well to these changes," Vlasak said. "I feel like this was exactly the type of match and competition we needed before going into our next conference match."

The Bears jump back into conference play on Sunday as the Idaho State Bengals come to town to play at 2 p.m.
