Bears Women's Tennis continues fall play at Colorado State Invitational
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Northern Colorado women's tennis team continued fall action at the Colorado State Invitational on Sunday. The weekend tournament was pushed back to one day of play due to weather conditions.
The Bears totaled nine wins in 15 matches between singles and doubles play against Colorado State. Both upperclassmen and underclassmen earned match wins in the final invitational before the USTA/ITA Regionals held in Las Vegas, Nev.
"I was proud of how hard all of our players competed today," head coach Brenda Vlasak said. "We showed a ton of heart, determination and dedication. We walked away with the winning record today against Colorado State. The team has been working hard in practices and it definitely showed today in our performances."
Adriana Nieto went 1-1 on the day after falling in the first match and taking the second. The Southlake, Texas native won the battle of the Adrianas after winning 5-7 (3), 7-5, 1-0 (6) against Adriana Wojakowska.
Senior Stephanie Catlin won her only singles match of the weekend. The Basingstoke, England native won 6-0, 6-1 against Mollie Cooper.
Freshman Laura Wehner was the only Bear to win both singles matches on the day. Wehner first took down Kwynn Ecton 6-1, 6-0. The Richard, New Zealand native then brought another win to UNC against Cooper, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (9).
Freshman Beth Coton won her one match that she played on Sunday. The Basingstoke, England native was able to grab a win against Lauren Pick, 6-4, 6-3.
Chrissie Hoolahan was unable to grab a win in two singles matches. She first fell 6-0, 6-3 to Wojakowska before losing to Natalie Heffron 6-2, 6-1.
Hilary Walters-West also was shut out from a win. Walters-West fell 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) to Maddie Buxton.
Freshmen Courtney Schulte and Marisa Baca both took part in one singles match on the day. Schulte was able to grab a win, 6-3, 6-4, against Lauren Pick while Baca fell in her lone match, 6-4, 7-6, to Buxton.
Junior Taylor Schumacher also won her only match of the day. The Austin, Texas native won her match 6-3, 6-3 against Ecton.
The Bears also won two of three doubles matches. Catlin and Coton took a win while Hoolahan and Wehner did as well. Walters-West and Nieto fell in their doubles match.
"It was a nice way to finish out our fall season before heading to regionals," Vlasak said.
The Bears turn around to compete at the USTA/ITA Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev., on Oct. 9 through Oct. 12.
