OGDEN, Utah – Northern Colorado's Stephanie Catlin was honored Tuesday as the Big Sky Conference Co-Women's Tennis Player of the Week, earning the first weekly honor of her career.
Catlin, a junior from Basingstoke, England, shared the honor with Sacramento State's Rebeca Delgado after winning two critical singles matches at the No. 3 spot over the weekend to give Northern Colorado a road sweep against Idaho State and Weber State and clinch a berth to the 2013 Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Championship.
Catlin defeated ISU's Svenja Tegtmeier 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 on Saturday and then came back to win 6-3, 6-1 against Weber State's Nittaya Phonharath. Catlin and partner Elizabeth Tapia (Panama City, Panama) also won a pair of doubles matches at No. 1, winning 8-4 against ISU and 8-5 against WSU.
"I am extremely proud of Steph's performances the past few weeks," Northern Colorado coach Brenda Vlasak said. "She has been working hard in a few aspects of her game and has made drastic improvements. Steph is a very talented athlete who I believe can beat anyone she steps foot on the court with."
The award is the second this season for the Bears after Tapia was Player of the Week on March 12.
Northern Colorado hadn't received a women's tennis Player of the Week award since joining the Big Sky in 2007.
Catlin, Tapia and the rest of the Bears are back in action at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, when they host instate-rival Colorado State on the Butler-Hancock Tennis Courts.
