Women's Tennis falls at home to Northern Arizona

GREELEY -- The Northern Colorado women's tennis team fought hard but could not clinch a win against conference rival Northern Arizona at Work Out West on Sunday.

"We had a tough weekend of competition," Northern Colorado coach Brenda Vlasak said.  "Playing Montana and Northern Arizona in the same weekend is tough, but we learned a lot from these matches and really competed well."

The No.1 doubles duo of juniors Stephanie Catlin (Basingstroke, England) and Elizabeth Tapia (Panama City, Panama) fought hard but fell in a tiebreaker to Hannah Stone and Johanna Vang in a close 8-7 (7-4) decision. The duo of Chrissie Hoolahan (Richmond, Surrey, England) and freshman Claire Uhle (Blue Bell, Pa.) and freshman Hilary Walters-West (Simi Valley, Calif.) and senior Jennifer Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif.) both lost to the Lumberjacks 8-4 at the No.2 and No.3 doubles positions.

In singles play, the closest match came at No. 5 with Uhle fighting back after dropping the first set to force a third-set tiebreaker but fell to Alice Pacaut of Northern Arizona 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.

"The team seems to understand that we are right there," Vlasak said. "If we continue to work hard in the next five days of practice, good things will happen. There is not much that separates Northern Colorado from the opponents that are beating us, and I feel like we are consistently improving."

Buchanan lost her match at the tough No. 1 singles position to Ghizalene Doballah 6-2, 6-3 while Tapia fell to Stone of Northern Arizona 6-0, 6-2 at No.2.

Catlin fell to Vang 6-3, 6-0 at No.3 singles while Hoolahan and Walters-West both lost 6-3, 6-2 at the No.4 and No.6 positions respectively to the Lumberjacks.

The Bears return to conference action on Saturday, March 2 when they travel to Eastern Washington to take on the Eagles at 11 a.m. in Spokane.
