Women's Tennis drops Big Sky opener to Montana

GREELEY – The Northern Colorado women's tennis team dropped its Big Sky opener 7-0 to Montana on Saturday afternoon inside the facilities at Work Out West.

"It's tough to open conference play against a strong team like Montana but I'm proud of our performance today," Northern Colorado coach Brenda Vlasak said. "We competed hard. We had opportunities in every match to go up and the difference maker was closing out when we have the lead.

"We came out with high energy in doubles and continually pieced points together and were very close to clinching the doubles point.  We are getting better and stronger match by match and I know that our players have it in them to play harder and compete harder. I believe they can, and will, do that tomorrow against NAU."

The matchup kicked off with doubles play with the Griz taking two of the three doubles matches. The Bears' No. 1 duo of Stephanie Catlin (Basingstroke, England) and Elizabeth Tapia (Panama City, Panama) opened up play on a high note, winning their match 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Chrissie Hoolahan (Richmond, Surrey, England) and Claire Uhle (Blue Bell, Pa.) lost their match 8-6, while Jennifer Buchanan (Fullerton, Calif.) and Hilary Walters-West (Simi Valley, Calif.) dropped an 8-3 match in No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Buchanan lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles for the Bears (1-3, 0-1 Big Sky) to Montana's Heather Davidson.

Tapia gave things a good run in No. 2 singles, taking her match to three sets. After dropping the first set 6-1 to Sasha Carter, Tapia, a junior, took set No. 2 7-5 to force a third and deciding set. Carter won the last set 6-3 to take the match.

Catlin, another junior, lost her match at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3 to Haley Driver, while Hoolahan dropped her match at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-0.

Uhle had a hard-fought two-set loss to Precious Gdadamosi. She forced things to a seventh game in the first set before falling 7-5 and dropped the second set 6-4 in No. 5 singles.

Walters-West wrapped things up at No. 6 singles, falling 6-3, 6-4 to Maddy Murray.

The Bears won't have much time to dwell on the Big Sky-opening loss as they play host to Northern Arizona tomorrow (Sunday) with another matchup at Work Out West beginning at 1 p.m.
