Women's tennis picked fifth in Big Sky preseason poll

OGDEN, Utah -- Northern Colorado's women's tennis team, which is scheduled to begin its 2010 season at the end of the month, has been picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conference.

The league released its preseason men's and women's tennis polls this afternoon, and the Bears women's team is viewed as the fifth best team in the league, ahead of Eastern Washington, Weber State, Portland State and Idaho State, but behind Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona and preseason-No. 1 Sacramento State.

Northern Colorado's men's team, which will start its season Saturday, Jan. 16, at Denver, under the direction of first-year coach Tim Bearman, is picked as the eighth-best team in the Big Sky's men's tennis race.

Sacramento State is again the pick to win the men's title hunt, with Montana State, Eastern Washington, Montana and Weber State making up the top five.

The Bears are picked ahead of Idaho State.

Sacramento State, the defending men's and women's conference champions, was nearly unanimously selected to finish first in the preseason poll as both teams received at eight first place votes for 64 points each. The Hornet women's team has won eight consecutive Big Sky titles and 62 consecutive matches over league competition while the men's team has won two of the last three championships and seven since joining the conference in 1996-97.

In the preseason poll on the men's side, Montana State was selected second with 51 points. Eastern Washington received one first-place vote and was selected third with 48 points. Montana and Weber State follow with 44 and 37 points respectively. Northern Arizona earned 30 points for sixth place while Portland State garnered 21 points for seventh. Northern Colorado edged out the Bengals for eighth place with 14 points.

On the women's side Northern Arizona was selected second with 50 points. Montana State and Montana tied for third, both with 47 points; however Montana State earned one first-place vote. Northern Colorado and Eastern Washington followed with 36 and 31 points respectively. Weber State finished in seventh place with 25 points and Portland State captured 16 points for eighth place.

The 2010 Big Sky Conference Championship will be played April 24-25 at the Gold River Racquet Club in Sacramento. The top four men's and women's teams from the regular season advance to the championship.
