Bears Fall to Buffs in Season Opener

GREELEY -- Northern Colorado began its women's soccer season Friday night at Jackson Stadium against Colorado with a 3-0 loss to the Buffs in the first leg of the Colorado Cup.
The Bears have a quick turn-around, taking on the University of Denver in the second match of the Colorado Cup at 1 p.m. Sunday at Colorado College's Colorado Springs campus.
"The crowd gave us a lot of energy," junior forward Chandler Guetz (Kiowa, Colo.) said. "We could not find the back of the net and the crowd was still really supportative."
Guetz made her Bear debut Friday night and did well. She put a lot of pressure on the Buffs, getting four quality shots off in the game.
"Chandler did well. She is an experienced player," head coach Tim Barrera said. "Everything Chandler has ever gotten is from hard work."
Colorado got out to a quick start with a goal by junior forward Anne Stuller in just the sixth minute of the game. Stuller's goal was set up by a header from Hayley Hughes that snuck past a couple of Bears defenders.
"The ball fell to their best finisher and she was able to put it away," Barrera said.
Colorado continued to apply pressure on the Bears and capitalized on a free kick by Stuller for her second goal of the night.
The Bears' best scoring chance came when junior forward Brittany Dunn (Centennial, Colo.) received a pass just inside the left side of the goal box form senior forward Alexsys Tamayo (Aurora, Colo.), but the goal shot narrowly missed.

The Bears will look for their first win against Denver, which also lost in the first leg of the Colorado Cup 1-0 at Jackson Stadium.
"Denver will be a tough challenge for us, but it will be good," Barrera said. "Facing all these challenges early in the season will help us in the long run."
