Bears soccer defeats Creighton at home after five games away
BOX
SCORE
GREELEY, Colo. -- After five games away from
Jackson Stadium, the Bears returned home with a 2-1 win against the
Creighton Blue Jays on Sunday. This raises the Bears to 4-4-1 on
the season.
Northern Colorado was quick to take control of the game
outshooting Creighton 7-3 in the first half. Junior goalkeeper
Heidi Owen only tallied one save in the first 45 minutes compared
to Creighton's two saves.
It was not until the second half that the Bears took the lead
and never looked back. A little over two minutes into the second
half junior Brittani Knott took a shot through a mob of defenders
off of a corner kick to put Northern Colorado up 1-0.
In the 63rd minute the Bears sealed the win with a
goal from freshman Danielle Birdsall. Birdsall took a breakaway
pass from sophomore Kimmie Feidler to score the game winning goal
putting Northern Colorado up 2-0.
Creighton put itself on the board three minutes later with a
breakaway goal from Jordan Bruch. Bruch took a long pass from
Brittany Neumann and just got the ball past Owen into the right
corner scoring the last goal of the game.
This was the third game in a row that the Bears have faces NSCAA
ranked teams and also marks the first time that Northern Colorado
has defeated a ranked team since entering Division I.
"It was a really good effort and we are really pleased with how
we worked today," said head coach Tim Barrera. "It was nice to come
back from five road trips and get the win at home."
Bears soccer returns to action next Sunday against the Wyoming
Cowgirls at 3 p.m. at Jackson Stadium. The game will be televised
live on Fox Soccer Channel as the FSC Game of the Week.
