Maughan Closes In On Victory No. 100
UNC head coach Jack Maughan is closing in on his 100th career victory. Maughan has tallied 97 career wins in his 17 years as the Bears' head coach. UNC's first dual meet of the year will be Jan. 11 at Oregon State.
UNC Head Coach Jack Maughan
Entering his 17th year at UNC, head coach Jack Maughan will begin a new era as the Bears re-enter the Division I ranks after a more than 30-year absence. UNC competed at the Division I level in wrestling in the up until the early 1970s. With the Bears competing as an Independent school, Maughan will hope to be instrumental in forming a new wrestling conference with neighboring rivals Wyoming and Air Force along with former North Central Conference rivals North Dakota State and South Dakota State. In the Bears' final year as a Division II school in 2002, Maughan and the Bears finished 3rd in the North Central Conference championships and 7th in the nation at the NCAA Div. II National Championships in Wheeling, W.Va. During Maughan's 16-year tenure, the Bears have produced three NCAA champions, five runners-up and 46 All-America performers. As a team, UNC has finished among the nation's top-10 seven times, including third- and fourth-place finishes in 1991 and 1992, respectively, and an eighth-place finish in 1997 and 1998. The Bears notched a 5th place finish in 1996 and a 7th place finish in 2002. Maughan's dual-meet record is 97-114-1.
