Bears wrestlers to compete in UNO Open
THIS WEEK: The Bears travel to Omaha this weekend for the Nebraska-Omaha Open. Over 30 teams will be participating including the NCAA I National Champions, the University of Minnesota and the NCAA I runners-up, the University of Iowa. Also competing are NCAA II runners-up, South Dakota State University and third place teams, the University of Oklahoma and the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: The University of Northern Colorado was picked to finish 13th in the nation in the NCAA II Wrestling Coaches Association preseason poll. Senior Tom Clemen was picked to finish eighth in the 197 pound weight division, and sophomore Jason McMillian was picked to place sixth in the heavyweight division.
BEARS OPEN SEASON AT COWBOY OPEN: The Bears opened up at the University of Wyoming Cowboy open. A variety of teams from all divisions competed in the meet. Early in the season and going up against tough competition, coach Jack Maughan was pleased with his teams performances, although he said it is still very difficult to tell. Freshman Jared Deguero led the Bears in the meet placing first in the165 pound weight class in the under 20 division. Deguero was the only Bear to place, but there were several UNC wrestlers battling for the third place position.
HEAD COACH: Jack Maughan is in his fifteenth season at the helm of the UNC wrestling program. During his tenure, the Bears have finished among the nation's top-10 on six occasions. Maughan has coached three national champions, four runners-ups and 28 All-Americans. BLUE AND GOLD LUNCHEON: The Blue and Gold Luncheon will be held every Monday at Noon at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th Street). Coach Maughan, as well as all in-season coaches, will speak at the weekly luncheon.
