MEET INFORMATION
The University of Northern Colorado Bears wrestling squad will begin their 2004-05 season at the Wyoming Cowboy Open on Sunday in Laramie. The Bears will be looking bounce back from a 3-10 dual season last year. The Bears return severall All-Americans from the Division II era after redshirting last season.
THE BEAR FACTS
UNC WRESTLERS AT WYOMING OPEN
The Bears will send 11 wrestlers to Laramie, Wyo., this Sunday for the Wyoming Cowboy Open. Three of the competitors will compete in the under 20 tournament and they include: Richard Lohr (141 lbs.), Sean Coughlin (157 lbs.) and John White (157 lbs.). Eight of the wrestlers will compete in the over 20 category and they include: Mark Hastings (133 lbs.), Dustin Uhland (149/157 lbs.), Matthew Harshman (157 lbs.), Mikell Surber (157 lbs.), Mark Reavley (157 lbs.), Shawn Hart (174 lbs.) and Cole Allison (197 lbs.). The Bears Wrestling Club will also be competing at the event and will include a number of unattached wrestlers.
FULL DIVISION I SCHEDULE
This season marks the second year of the return to Division I wrestling for the Bears. UNC will have a full Division I schedule this season to meet the scheduling requirements of Division I wrestling. Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open Set for Nov. 21 The Bears will open the home season on Nov. 21 by hosting the Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open in Butler-Hancock Hall. The tournament is open to all Post-High School competitors. All participants must be registered by 5 p.m. on Nov. 20 to George Thompson. BEARS TO HOST 6 HOME DUALS
UNC will play host to six home duals this season but all will come after the first of the year. The Bears' home-opening dual will come against Oregon State on Jan. 14 at 3 p.m.. The Bears will also play host to Portland State (Jan. 16, 2 pm), Fresno State (Jan. 29, 2 pm), Utah Valley State (Feb. 18, 6 pm), North Dakota State (Feb. 18, 8 pm) and Wyoming (Feb. 24, 7 pm).
HEAD COACH Jack Maughan
Currently in his 18th year at UNC, head coach Jack Maughan will continue a new era as the Bears re-enter the Division I ranks after a more than 30-year absence. With the Bears competing as an Independent school, Maughan will hope to be instrumental in forming a new wrestling conference with neighboring rivals Wyoming and Air Force along with former North Central Conference rivals North Dakota State and South Dakota State. Maughan captured his 100th career win last season in the Bears' final home dual, a 26-11 win over Utah Valley State. Maughan and his wife, Brenda, were married in the offseason and are expecting their first child this February. The family lives in Windsor.
