Hutchins Named to Verizon Academic All-District At-Large Team

GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado wrestler Loren Hutchins was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII first-team college division men's at-large squad as announced by coordinating officials on Thursday.

The at-large team includes student-athletes from the sports of crew, gymnastics, skiing, men's volleyball, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, wrestling, golf and rifle.

The junior Hutchins (Sheridan, Wyo.) carries a 4.0 G.P.A. in computer art. Hutchins completed his first season at UNC this past year and posted a 20-8 record at the 149 lbs. weight class. He was ranked as high as fifth nationally in his weight class and qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships.

He was one of three first-team members to post a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. and one of two wrestlers on the first team. For being selected to the first-team, Hutchins' name will now appear on the national ballot for consideration for Academic All-American.

Hutchins is the sixth UNC student-athlete selected to the first-team during the 2002-03 school year. Overall, 10 UNC student-athletes have been either first or second-team Verizon Academic All-District selections this year.

The Verizon academic all-district team honors student-athletes who excel both on the playing field and in the classroom. The Verizon Academic awards are sponsored by and on voted on by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).

District VII includes schools in the states of Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Selections are open to student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and carry at least a 3.20 G.P.A. The college division includes Division II, Division II and NAIA schools.
