Stafford moves into semifinals, Olson drops to consolation bracket
NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships
Ronnie Stafford is still in contention for a national title. At 141 pounds, Stafford is the only UNC wrestler still undefeated after the first two rounds of the NCAA Division II National Championships at the University of Wisconsin, Parkside.
Stafford captured a 3-1 victory in overtime over Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Jason Nestor in the quarterfinal matches Friday night. Up next for Stafford, he will wrestle Matt Dodgen from Central Oklahoma in tomorrow's semifinals.
At 149 pounds, Simon Hoepfner lost his second match of the tournament to Southern Illinois Edwardsville's Nathan Graumenz. The 12-3 major decision put Hoepfner out of the tournament for the Bears.
Brody Olson lost his match in the quarterfinal round at 157 pounds to Josh Schommer. Schommer is currently ranked first in the nation, and Olson could not find a way to score on him as he went down in a 10-0 major decision. Olson will face Shad Benton (Pitt.-Johnstown) later Friday night for an opportunity to advance in the consolation round.
