Wrestling Weekly Release: UNC heads into last regular season competitions

2001-2002 RECORD: The Bears are 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the North Central Conference. They are currently ranked 17th in the nation.

THIS WEEK: Coming off of a 37-4 loss to #2 North Dakota State, the competition does not exactly get any easier. The Bears will match up against Division I Wyoming Wednesday evening in Lararmie, Wyo., at 7 p.m. They will return home to compete Thursday night against Minnesota State, Mankato, at 7 p.m. in Butler-Hancock Hall. Mankato is currently ranked 5th in the nation.

UPCOMING COMPETITION: UNC has not beaten Wyoming since the 1992-93 season when they won 25-16. Mankato defeated the Bears 24-10 last year and holds a 9-7 all-time series lead over UNC. The Mavericks are currenly 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the North Central Conference with their only loss in the NCC going to North Dakota State, 28-11.

#2 NDSU TOO MUCH FOR BEARS TO HANDLE: With the exception of Jason McMillan, #2 North Dakota State rolled over #17 Northern Colorado in a Saturday afternoon match in Butler-Hancock Hall. NDSU tallied three pins and a major decision en route to a 37-4 victory over the Bears. At 197 pounds, McMillan, ranked eighth in the nation, defeated Anthony Vittetoe with a 12-2 major decision for UNC's only win of the day. NDSU's #3 Matt Strawser (125 lbs.), #4 Jake Thielbar (133 lbs.), and Cloin Kelly (149 lbs.) all had pins for the Bison.

HEAD COACH: Jack Maughan is in his fifteenth season at the helm of the UNC wrestling program. During his tenure, the Bears have finished among the nation's top-10 on six occasions. Maughan has coached three national champions, four runners-ups and 28 All-Americans. A 1986 graduate of North Dakota State University, where he was a two-time All-American performer, Maughan has a career dual record of 87-97-1.

BLUE AND GOLD LUNCHEON: The Blue and Gold Luncheon will be held every Monday at Noon at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th Street). Coach Maughan, as well as all in-season coaches, will speak at the weekly luncheon.
