UNC Grapplers Take Care of Business With 32-13 Win Over Western State
Head coach Jack Maughan and the UNC wrestling team continued its torrid streak at home with a 32-13 win over visiting Western State on Saturday night in Butler-Hancock Hall. The Bears won their fourth match in a row to move to 5-5 on the season, while Western State dropped to 0-6.
The 13th-ranked Bears benefitted from a pair of forfeits at 149 lbs. and heavyweight. UNC then went out and won five of the eight other matches to earn the dual victory.
The dual was tied at 9-9 after four matches but then No. 4-ranked Brody Olson (157 lbs.) was able to eak out with a 4-3 win over Western State's Jack Quintana. Jared Deaguero (165 lbs.) kept the Bears momentum going with a dominating 15-5 major decision over the Mountaineers' Dan Roesch.
The Mountaineers responded with a major decision of their own when Cameron Bretz out-pointed Tanner Linsacum at 174 lbs., 17-8. But Cole Allison ended any hopes of a Mountaineer comeback with a solid 13-3 major decision over Dillon Waggoner.
The Bears' Jason McMillan put a capper on the evening with a pin only 1:02 into his match with Andrew Menees.
