Bears pin three to win second straight dual

The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team, currently ranked 17th in the nation, won their second straight dual with a victory over Adams State Wednesday night in Alamosa, Colo. The Bears started slowly, but once they got going, they handled the Grizzlies 27-17.

Starting the dual at 133 pounds, UNC's Cole Hansen lost a 22-7 technical fall to Jimmy Melek of Adams. Ronnie Stafford, who climbed into the national rankings at number seven this week, continued his winning ways at 141 pounds defeating the number-five ranked wrestler, Shane Barnes, with a 5-3 decision bringing the Bears within two points, 5-3.

Both teams continued to hang close together alternating victories including a pin by UNC's Jared Deaguero at 165-pounds. Finally, Cole Allison (184 lbs.) pinned Jeff Roseberry just 32 seconds into the match and broke open the scores 18-11. Jason McMillan (ranked 8th in the nation) followed with another pin in the 197-pound match up at just 1:36. UNC's Tony Shunke earned a victory at the heavyweight spot, and the Bears were up a safe 27-17. They dropped the last match as 125-pound Melvin Oliveros was pinned at 5:30 by Brian Pitts (8th in the nation).
