GREELEY, Colo. - No. 17-ranked Reece Hopkin continued his dominance on Thursday night and led the University of Northern Colorado wrestling team to a 24-15 win over South Dakota State at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion.
Hopkin scored a pinfall at 1:53 over South Dakota State's Cody Nehl, who had won eight straight. It was also the first time this season Nehl has been pinned. Hopkin picked up his seventh pin of the season en route to improving his record overall record to 21-4 and dual record to 8-0.
The Bears (5-3) won their first five matches and took a 20-0 lead to start the dual. It was the second straight win for Northern Colorado over SDSU.
Senior 157-pound Nathan Gerrard got things rolling for the Bears in the first match of the meet. Gerrard put the match away in the third period after leading 4-2 with a takedown and near fall to give himself a 9-2 lead. Gerrard picked up another point for riding time and won the bout 10-2. The win improved Gerrard's record to 14-13 overall and 3-5 in duals.
In the 165 pound match, freshman Devan Lewis held a narrow 2-1 lead after the second period. He shut the door on SDSU's Brad Gregory in the third by notching an escape and a takedown that gave him a 5-1 win. Lewis upped his record to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in duals.
Shawn Hart rolled in his 174 pound match against SDSU's Travis Gottschalk, winning 12-3. Hart took advantage of three takedowns and one near fall to seal the victory. Hart's record is now 19-4 overall and 7-1 in duals.
Sophomore Tim Sexton posted a takedown and a near fall in the first period of his 184 pound match and held on to win 5-1 over SDSU's Levi Kremeyer. Sexton is now 16-12 overall and 3-5 in duals.
Sophomore Beau Hessler rounded out the string of wins for the Bears after he picked up a 12-4 major decision over SDSU's Marcus Waters. Hessler put the match away in the third period with two takedowns. Hessler is now 6-12 overall and 3-4 in duals.
The Bears will return to action at 7 p.m. on Monday as they host the North Dakota State Bison at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. Live results from the meet can be accessed free of charge on UNCBears.com.
