Northern Colorado Scores 27-12 Win Over Utah Valley State

OREM, Utah - The University of Northern Colorado wrestling squad welcomed back three wrestlers to the starting lineup on Friday in a 27-12 dual victory at Utah Valley State.

Head coach Jack Maughan was pleased to have sophomore Dustin Uhland (149 lbs.), junior Tanner Linsacum (197 lbs.) and sophomore Mark Hastings (133 lbs.) back in the starting lineup.

"It was kind of a welcome back party for us tonight," Maughan said. "It's always going to be difficult in the transition to Division I, but having some wrestlers with a lot of college experience certainly helps on the road in dual matches."

The Bears got off to a flying start by winning the first two duals of the night. Freshman Kenny Hashimoto (141 lbs.) rolled to an easy 20-3 technical fall victory over UVSC's Justin Rawle. Hashimoto moved to 11-3 on the season.

Uhland continued the Bears' success with a 14-5 major decision over the Grizzlies' Clayton Wolf at 149 pounds. Uhland improved to 4-4 on the season with the win.

UVSC's Tanner Cowan (157 lbs.) used a late flurry to put the Grizzlies on the scoreboard. Cowan tallied a 10-9 win over the Bears' Mikell Surber. Surber fell to 2-6 on the year.

The Grizzlies Mark Blain pulled his squad to within 9-6 in the dual after a 13-8 decision at 165 pounds over the Bears' Caleb Van Vorst. Van Vorst dropped to 2-8 on the season.

Northern Colorado then ran off four straight victories to secure the dual win. Redshirt freshman Shawn Hart started the string of wins with a 17-11 win at 174 pounds. Hart improved to 15-4 overall.

Junior Cole Allison deflated the UVSC home crowd with a 1:22 pin over UVSC's Ivan Bigney. Allison improved to 7-7 on the season.

Linsacum then made his season debut with a thrilling 14-11 win over UVSC's Darren Cooper. Linsacum had not wrestled since he claimed All-American honors at the 2003 NCAA Div. II championships.

Freshman Sam Safken put a capper on the evening for the Bears with a forfeit victory at heavyweight. Safken's win improved him to 5-4 on the season.

The Bears' Blayze Bahe (125 lbs.) and Hastings (133 lbs.) suffered losses at their respective weights to end the dual action.

Northern Colorado's win improved the Bears to 1-3 on the season, while Utah Valley State dropped to 1-6 overall.

Northern Colorado will be back in action next Friday in its home opener against the Pac 10's Oregon State Beavers. The match will begin at 7 p.m. in Butler-Hancock Hall.
