George Thompson enters his seventh season as an assistant coach on the Northern Colorado wrestling staff in 2005-06. He oversees the Bears' strength and conditioning program and handles many of the day-to-day operations of the wrestling office.

Thompson arrived at UNC from North Dakota State, where he enjoyed a standout career under head coach Bucky Maughan (father of UNC head coach Jack Maughan). While at NDSU, Thompson was a four-time All-American and won the 1997 national championship at 134 pounds. He posted a career record of 96-32 which ranks eighth on the NDSU all-time list.

He was awarded an NCAA post-graduate scholarship and completed his master's degree in sport administration at UNC. Thompson and his wife, Valerie, were married in the summer of 2004 and reside in Greeley.
