Cherrington adds four recruits
Ben Cherrington, the head wrestling coach at the University of Northern Colorado recently announced the remainder of his 2011 signing class. Cherrington added four grapplers, bringing his total amount of signings to nine after signing five in November.

At the 2011 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, both Northern Colorado junior Casey Cruz (133 pounds) and senior Justin Gaethje (149) lost in the opening sessions before bouncing back to win in the evening session and advance to day two.

At the 2011 NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference Championships, the Northern Colorado team finished in sixth place with 24 points and all nine wrestlers advanced to at least the consolation semifinals.

Grapplers travel to NCAA West Regional on Sunday
Northern Colorado looks to qualify as many wrestlers as possible for the NCAA Championships on Sunday at the Western Wrestling Conference Championship/NCAA West Regional. The Bears, along with Air Force, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming will take to the mats at the Air Force Academy beginning at 10:00 am.

Wrestling finishes dual season Friday at Air Force
Northern Colorado heads to the Air Force Academy for its final dual of the season. The Bears are hoping to end the regular season on a high note with their second win in Western Wrestling Conference action. A year ago, the Bears won by a score of 24-13 against the Falcons. The team will then take a slight break from competition before returning to the Academy on March 6 for the NCAA West Regional and WWC Championships.

Grapplers host pair of duals and end day with a 1-1 mark
Northern Colorado wrestling split its duals on the day, defeating Cal State Bakersfield 21-19 before losing 32-6 to Western Wrestling Conference foe Northern Iowa. With the split the Bears move to 2-10 on the year and 1-3 in the WWC.

Northern Colorado's Casey Cruz continued his stellar junior season Wednesday, defeating 18th-ranked Tyler Cox 7-3, but the rest of the Bears’ were not as fortunate and lost to No. 14 Wyoming 43-3.

Wrestling starts busy week with Wyoming on Wednesday
Northern Colorado hosts #14 Wyoming on Wednesday in Western Wrestling Conference action and then returns to the mats on Friday for a double-dual with Cal State Bakersfield and Northern Iowa. Wrestling loses 25-12 at North Dakota State
Having to forfeit two weight classes again hurt the Northern Colorado wrestling team as it lost 25-12 to North Dakota State on Sunday afternoon. The Bears (1-7, 1-2 WWC) once again won four of the eight bouts competed, but surrendering 12 team points to the Bison (7-2, 1-1 WWC) was too much to overcome.

Wrestling wins 26-21 at South Dakota State
Northern Colorado won five of the seven contested bouts on Friday evening at South Dakota State to win the Western Wrestling Conference dual, 26-21. Junior Casey Cruz (141) and senior Justin Gaethje (149) each posted bonus point wins to get the Bears (1-6, 1-1 WWC) started with a 10-0 lead and the team never looked back.

Northern Colorado turns its attention to dual action for the remainder of the season and hits the road for a pair of Western Wrestling Conference matches over the weekend. The Bears wrestle at South Dakota State on Friday and North Dakota State on Sunday. All three teams are 0-1 in WWC action as the Bears lost to Utah Valley and both SDSU and NDSU lost to Northern Iowa.

The University of Northern Colorado wrestling team lost all three duals at the annual Lone Star Duals on Saturday. The Bears fell 30-19 to #14 Arizona State, 28-12 to Appalachian State and 24-14 to The Citadel.

Northern Colorado competes in its final tournament of the 2010-11 season as it heads to the 2011 Hilton Arlington Lone Star Duals. At the tournament, the Bears will face Arizona State (10:00 am), Appalachian State (Noon) and The Citadel (8:00 pm). The Bears return to the Lone Star Duals for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Wrestling heads to Utah for a dual and a tournament
Northern Colorado returns to the mats this weekend, competing twice at Utah Valley over the weekend. The Bears will begin Western Wrestling Conference action with a dual at 7:00 pm on Friday and then will stay in Orem, Utah for the Utah Valley Open on Saturday. This is the first competition for the Blue & Gold since the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 19.

Wrestling hosts second-straight ranked team to town
Northern Colorado will continue its home stretch, hosting No. 15/22 Nebraska on Friday at 7:00 pm. The Bears began the dual season with a 25-9 loss to No. 5 Boise State and then had nine wrestlers place in the top six at the annual Old Chicago Open inside Butler-Hancock. Friday is the last home event for the grapplers until Feb. 4 when they host Oregon State.

Second-year head coach Ben Cherrington has announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent at the University of Northern Colorado. Cherrington adds Nick Adams, Travis Himmelman, Cody Knight, Jess Meis and Garrett Vasquez for the 2011-12 season.

Nine Bears finish in top six at annual Old Chicago Open
True freshman Nick Bayer continued to shine for the Northern Colorado wrestling team, winning the 197 pound bracket at the annual Old Chicago Open on Saturday. Bayer led a contingent of nine Bears who finished in the top six at the team’s lone tournament of the year.

Busy weekend for wrestling starts Friday with #5 Boise State
Northern Colorado will compete in front of the hometown crowds on back-to-back days at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion, beginning the home portion of the 2010-11 schedule. The Bears kick off the dual season against #5 Boise State on Friday at 6:00 pm and then host the annual Old Chicago Open on Saturday beginning at 9:00 am. There will be six mats on Saturday for the tournament.
