Two Bears Win TItles At Home Tournament

GREELEY, Colo. -- Both Casey Cruz and Eric Brennan won titles at the 2009 Old Chicago Northern Colorado Open as the Northern Colorado wrestlers had eight wrestlers place on Sunday evening in the only home tournament of the year.

Charlie Alexander from Western State was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler after winning the title at 285 pounds, while Jeremiah Constance was awarded the Pinner's Award for the most pins in the least amount of time. Constance competed unattached and finished second at 285 pounds, recording three falls in 1:51.

Cruz posted a 5-0 record to win the title at 141 pounds, winning two bouts by fall and three by decision, including a 3-0 win in the finals over second-seeded Jon Gappmaier (unattached-Mesa State).

Brennan went 4-0 at 184 pounds with a fall, a major decision and two decisions en route to the title. Brennan defeated Adam Carey 3-0 in the finals.

Junior Justin Gaethje went quadruple overtime in the finals at 157 pounds, but top-seeded Ganbayar Sanjaa tallied a reversal in the fourth overtime to get the edge in the 4-4 score. Gaethje had a technical fall and a fall in the first two rounds before dropping in the finals.

Sophomore Tanner Weiks entered as the third seed and finished second after losing 10-5 in the finals to top-seeded Bekzod Abdurakhmanov from Colby. Weiks tallied three decisions in the first three rounds on the way to the title match.

Senior Tony Mustari finished in third place at the tournament, winning three rounds by fall and one by major decision, posting a 5-1 record in the tournament. Sophomore Brandon Kammerzell also finished in third place with a record of 5-1. In the first two rounds, he tallied a fall and technical fall and also had a 4-3 decision over Carter Adams from AF Prep in the wrestleback quarterfinals.

Senior Justin Tuell placed fourth at 285 pounds and Ed Matthews was sixth at 197 pounds for the other two Bears placers.

Next week, the Bears head to Troy, New York for the Northeast Collegiate Duals. Northern Colorado will wrestle Maryland, Hofstra, American and Binghamton at the tournament.
