Wrestlers Can't Contain Cowboys In League OpenerRELATED CLICKS LARAMIE, Wyo. - In the Western Wrestling Conference opener for both teams, Wyoming got on the scoreboard early and never looked back, defeating Northern Colorado 33-6 on Friday evening. The dual started at a strong weight for the Cowboys (5-2, 1-0), 165 pounds, where ninth-ranked Shane Onufer got a technical fall over Kevin O'Brien - a recent transfer to the Bears (1-9, 0-1) from West Point - 19-4 (7:00). O'Brien was competing for the first time in a Northern Colorado uniform. The Cowboys also won the next six bouts to take a 30-3 advantage, though senior Tony Mustari gave 11th-ranked Michael Martinez everything he had, forcing overtime. After no scoring in the first period, Mustari chose down to start the second stanza and took a 1-0 lead with an escape just 11 seconds into the period. Martinez tallied a takedown for the 2-1 score at the end of two. Both wrestlers earned a caution point and riding time knotted the score at 3-3 for overtime. Again no points were scored in the first period, but Martinez was able to tally an escape and takedown for the 6-3 victory. Wrestling for the first time since the Cliff Keen Invitational on December 4, 20th-ranked Kenny Hashimoto (141) won a 9-2 decision over Chase Smith for the 30-3 team score. Hashimoto recorded a takedown in the first period and led throughout the bout. Two classes later, junior Justin Gaethje (157) added three more points to the team total with a 6-4 decision over Jimmy Belleville for the 33-6 final.
