Five Wrestlers Compete in University Nationals
AKRON, Ohio - Five Northern Colorado wrestlers competed in the University Nationals this weekend in Akron, Ohio.
Junior Tony Mustari wrestled at 60kg in Greco-Roman and dropped to 55kg for the freestyle. Mustari won his first round match at 60kg by decision (3-0, 0-3, 4-1). The junior would proceed to win until before being knocked out in the semifinals by Ohio State's Nikko Triggas in a decision (8-2, 0-7, 2-1). Triggas would go on to win that weight division.
In the freestlye bracket, Mustari lost in the championship match to Zach Sanders of the Minnesota Storm by decision (1-0, 4-1). Mustari was named an All-American in both Greco-Roman and freestyle.
Freshman Ray Hall also wrestled in both styles and became an All-American in Greco-Roman at 79kg. Hall lost his first match by decision (5-0, 6-0). Hall would bounce back and eventually face fellow Bear, Adam Carey in the third round, and would win that match by decision (6-0, 0-2, 1-0). Hall lost his next match by decision (3-7, 2-2, 4-1) to Danny Michaels of the Cleveland Wrestling Club.
Northern Colorado sophomore Justin Gaethje wrestled at 74kg and lost his first match by technical fall (6-0, 5-0) to Marco Toledo.
Adam Carey wrestled at 79kg and won his first round match by decision (6-0, 3-1) over Robbie Michaels of the Cleveland Wrestling Club. Carey lost the quarterfinal match by decision (2-0, 2-3, 1-0) to Davon John before losing to teammate Ray Hall later in the bracket.
Older brother Patrick Carey wrestled at 96kg and had a bye in the first round. Carey lost in the second round by pin (0-3, 0:45) to Ryan Sutton of Missouri Valley Wrestling.
