Bears Win Four Weight Classes At Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open

GOLDEN, Colo. - The Northern Colorado wrestling team won four weight class brackets at the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open, hosted by Colorado School of Mines on Saturday. Junior Tony Mustari (125), junior Kenny Hashimoto (141), sophomore Justin Gaethje (157) and freshman Eric Brennan (197) were all victorious for the Bears.
Mustari posted a 4-0 record with all wins being extra-point victories as he tallied one technical fall, one fall and two major decisions en route to the title. Hashimoto tallied three falls, all in the first period for his first tournament title of the year. Gaethje won the title with a forfeit victory over teammate Daniel Prater. Gaethje won four rounds with two falls, one major decision and a forfeit, while Prater ended 2-1 with wins by fall and decision. Brennan also posted a 3-0 record at 197 pounds to win the title with two of his three victories being by extra points with a fall and major decision.
Freshman Brandon Kammerzell finished in third place at 174 pounds with a record of 3-1 and two of his three victories were major decisions. Patrick Carey also brought home a third-place medal at 197 pounds with a 5-1 record and one major decision victory. Justin Tuell was the third Bear to win a third-place medal, doing so with a record of 3-1 and one fall.
Freshman Zach Maes placed sixth at 133 pounds, posting a record of 1-3 with his lone victory coming by major decision over Roman Sutton of Colorado State-Pueblo, 17-6. Senior Cooper Hayes also placed sixth at 149 pounds after a record of 2-3.
