Bears Set to Open Spring Season in Arizona
GREELEY, Colo. – The Northern Colorado women’s golf
team will begin its spring campaign on Saturday, February 28, at
the NAU Red Rocks Invitational in Sedona, Ariz.
The tournament will take place at the Oakcreek Country Club, with
17 teams participating. Saturday will be a shotgun start at 1 p.m.,
while Sunday will start at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
The Bears will be trying to carry over their final performance from
the fall where they finished in 4th, just six strokes behind the
leader at the SDSU Aztec Fall Classic.
The Bears will be led this spring behind the strong play of their
four seniors. Katie Avery, a redshirt senior from Highlands Ranch,
Colo., had her best performance of the fall at the SDSU Aztec Fall
Classic, where she shot an overall score of 160 through two rounds
and finished off the tournament tied for 20th.
Another senior the Bears are looking to rally behind is Shayna
Godfrey. Godfrey, from Sterling, Colo., also had her strongest
showing at the SDSU Aztec Fall Classic, where she tallied an
overall score of 158 and finished tied for 15th.
After limited play in the fall, seniors Heather Daviner and Matti
Nelson are also ready to help lead the women’s golf team to a
successful season. Daviner had a successful spring last year, where
in a dual against Wyoming she tied for the individual title. Senior
Matti Nelson will be both guiding and playing this season along
side her younger sister, freshman Ali Nelson.
