Women's Basketball Adds Transfer From Drake

Aug. 10, 2006

GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado first-year head women's basketball coach Jaime White announced the addition of Chelsie Luhring (Parkersburg, Iowa/Grundy Center H.S./Drake) to the program on Thursday.

"Chelsie is going to be a good player for us," said White. "She can shoot the lights out. This year she will bring maturity to the team and will help us in practice."

Luhring (5'11, Guard/Forward), a native of Parkersburg, Iowa, spent her freshman season of 2005-06 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. There she saw action for a team that was 17-12 overall and played Nebraska in the WNIT.

At Grundy Center High Luhring was a two-time first-team Iowa 2A all-state selection as well as a two-time unanimous first-team All-North Iowa Cedar League (NICL) West Conference choice and the Marshalltown Times Republican Player of the Year. She helped her team to a state championship her senior season after finishing as the state runner-up during her junior campaign; she was named to the state's all-tournament team each of those seasons. Luhring owns school records for assists in a career (307), assists in a season (102) and free throw percentage in a season (85.0%) and scored 1,374 career points at Grundy Center. She also participated in both the Gatorade and NICL all-star games.

Luhring also competed in tennis and volleyball at Grundy Center. On the tennis court she was a three-time state qualifier, placing fourth her sophomore season and sixth her senior year. She helped her team to a regional championship and fourth place finish as a senior. On the volleyball court she was a second-team all-conference pick. Luhring was also an academic all-conference pick in both basketball and volleyball.

Chelsie is the daughter of Randy and Connie Luhring. Under NCAA transfer rules she will sit out the 2006-07 season and be a redshirt sophomore beginning in 2007-08.

Luhring will be one of four total newcomers to the Bears team in 2006-07. She joins a trio of freshmen in Tina Fox (North Platte, Neb./North Platte H.S.), Sara Hemmings (Windsor, Colo./Greeley West H.S.) and Kaley Hoover (Emory, Texas/Rains H.S.).

Northern Colorado, who became official members of the Big Sky Conference on July 1, will compete against a full Big Sky schedule in 2006-07. The Bears open the season on Nov. 3 by hosting Regis University in an exhibition contest. The regular season starts for the Bears in a Nov. 11 contest at UMKC.
