Feb. 7, 2006
GREELEY, Colo. - University of Northern Colorado women's basketball freshman guard Whitley Cox was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday.
Cox earned the award after going for a career-high 15 points in Northern Colorado's 63-62 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday. She went 5-of-6 from the floor, dished out three assists and pulled down four rebounds.
Cox is the first Bears player to win an independent award this season. South Dakota State's Heather Sieler earned Player of the Week honors.
Ten Division I Independent teams have joined to award Player of the Week awards and compile individual and team statistics. The teams are Cal Davis, IPFW, Longwood, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, South Dakota State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley State. Awards are voted on by participating team sports information directors and are released every Tuesday.
