Women's Basketball Gets Short End Of 55-48 Decision Against Denver

DENVER - Missed shots and opportunities summed up the University of Northern Colorado women's basketball team's night on Thursday, as the Bears lost 55-48 to the Denver Pioneers at Hamilton Gym.

The Bears (12-12) shot 33.3 percent from the floor for the game and went 6-of-25 from 3-point range. No Northern Colorado player finished in double figures, the only time this season that has happened.

Despite the off night, Northern Colorado stayed in the hunt. The Bears took a 24-21 lead with 4:58 left in the first half after a 14-3 run. DU came back to take a 28-26 halftime advantage. Northern Colorado went 10-of-30 from the field in the half but forced 10 turnovers to keep with the pace.

Denver went up 35-26 just over three minutes into the second half, but the Bears were able to cut the lead to four after a layup from Dani Veal. The Pioneers went back up 41-33 after a lay-in by Tyesha Lowery, then Northern Colorado flashed back with a 9-0 run to take a 42-41 lead with 9:24 left.

Both teams continued to trade punches, until the Pioneers scored the knockout with a 7-1 run to put the score at 55-48 with 2:40 left on the clock. The Pioneers and Bears went cold in the remaining minutes, as the teams missed a combined five shots to close out the game.

The Bears were led in scoring by Danielle Hagen with eight, while Whitley Cox scored seven and grabbed a career-high nine rebounds. Lowery had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Denver.

Northern Colorado will close out its home season with a showdown with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. on Saturday. It is a rematch of the 63-62 buzzer beater game the Bears won on Feb. 4 in Corpus Christi.
