Bengals get better of Bears in Pocatello

POCATELLO – There's something about Reed Gym that bothers the Northern Colorado women's basketball team. The Bears dropped their sixth consecutive game at Idaho State with the last four years all being single digit spreads. On Monday evening, the Bears fell 57-52 to move to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky Conference action.

"We played off and got a couple of steals early," said Head Coach Jaime White. "I thought Idaho State did a good job of getting back in transition defense though and we weren't able to finish. We got into foul trouble in the first half and they were able to go on a run to end the first half. That has been kind of a nemesis for us. We have got to be a little bit smarter with fouling and learn to play with them."

Northern Colorado was whistled for 24 fouls, including five in the final 1:30 when the team was trying to stop play and put Idaho State (9-5, 1-0 Big Sky) on the free throw line.

Senior forward Kaisha Brown has always had a great end to the games in Pocatello and Monday was no exception as she hit five free throws and a layup in the final 1:06 en route to a team-best 17 points. As a freshman she hit 2 triples and assisted on another in the last 37 seconds, while she scored nine points in the second half as a sophomore including a three-pointer with 37 seconds on the clock and a year ago, made a fastbreak layup with 30 seconds left.

Brown was joined in double figure scoring by junior forward Lauren Oosdyke with 12 points. Junior guard Victoria Timm led the team with seven rebounds as the Bears lost for the first time all year when winning the battle of the boards (45-40).

"We were trying to go at {Ashleigh} Vella," said White. "She did a great job. It seemed she played with four fouls for half of the game."

Vella led the Bengals with 17 points and nine rebounds and made 6-of-8 from the free throw line. Also scoring in double figures were Kaela Oakes with 14 and Chelsea Pickering with 13.

The two teams were tied at 41-41 in the second half with 8:49 to play when Idaho State scored the next four. Freshman Stephanie Lee made a layup to cut the lead to two, 45-43 with 4:42 to play but Kara Jenkins was able to make a three-pointer after Timm almost had a steal to stretch the lead to five, 48-43 and send the Bengals crowd of 889 into a frenzy.

Brown's layup with 17 ticks remaining cut the Bengals lead to just three, 55-52, but Oakes made her two final free throws for the 57-52 final.

The Bears return home to host a much-improved Sacramento State on Saturday at 2:05 pm. The Hornets are 7-8 on the year with a 2-0 start in Big Sky play.
