Tracy Chao
Position: Assistant Coach (3rd season)
College: Wake Forest, 2003
Tracy Chao (pronounced CHOW), a former standout player at Wake Forest, enters her third season as an assistant coach with Northern Colorado in 2007. She is involved with all aspects of the program.
Chao played for the Demon Deacons from 1999-02, was part of four teams that qualified for NCAA Tournaments and her nationally ranked squad compiled a 49-31-6 record during her playing tenure. Chao played in seven games as a defender during her freshman year, as the team advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, before moving to the goalkeeper position in 2000 after two keepers suffered season-ending injuries.
Chao did a remarkable job in-goal that season, earning team MVP honors after starting 18 of 20 games, making 85 saves (fifth most in a single-season in Wake Forest history), recording three shutouts and a 1.52 goals allowed average as Wake advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The highlight of the season was a 1-0 shutout against eventual national champion North Carolina; Chao became the first ACC goalkeeper to ever shutout the Tar Heels.
Chao returned to a defenders role as a junior, playing 25 matches over her final two seasons and registering one assist. She completed her bachelor's degree in sociology at Wake Forest in 2003. Prior to playing at Wake Forest, she captained her club team, '81 CASL Raleigh Spartan Spirit, to state championships in 1993 and 1996.
A starter on the North Carolina State Select team, she participated in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) from 1995-1998 and was a member of the Region III Pool team. As a prep, Chao was an all-state soccer player, Region 6 Player of the Year, Tri-Seven Conference Player of the Year, three-time all-region and all-conference selection at Wake Forest-Rolesville High.
A native of Raleigh, NC., Chao graduated from Wake Forest University with a bachelor's degree in sociology and holds a master's degree in sport administration from the University of Northern Colorado.
