LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - University of Northern Colorado senior Kelley Newton fired a 1-over score of 73 in the first round of the UMKC Kenneth Smith Classic on Monday and is the overall leader entering Tuesday's final round.

Newton is one stroke ahead of Christy Carter of Oral Roberts while five total golfers are within three strokes of Newton's day one lead.

One year ago, Newton also fired a round of 73 and was the overall leader after day one; she finished 10th at the completition of last year's tournament.

As a team Northern Colorado, the defending champion at the event, is third overall, trailing Oral Roberts by 12 strokes and Northern Iowa by 10 shots.

Junior Jenny Henderson had a round of 79 on Monday and is 13th overall (+7). Sophomore Heather Daviner is 29th (+10), sophomore Matti Nelson is 48th (+14) and junior Regina Rodriguez is 49th (+15).

Play concludes at the event on Tuesday morning.
