UNC Tabbed As #7 Seed For NCC Softball Championship Tournament

The UNC softball team will be the No. 7 seed in the 2003 North Central Conference Women's Softball Championships scheduled for Friday, May 2 and Satuday, May 3 at Caswell Park in North Mankato, Minn. The Bears will take on No. 2 seed Nebraska-Omaha in the first round at 11 a.m. on Friday. North Dakota State (35-6) is the No. 1 seed.

UNC is 16-19 overall this season with an NCC mark of 6-8.

North Dakota State won its second NCC Championship last season with a dramatic 11-inning win over Augustana in the second championship game. The Bison advanced to the NCAA Division II finals after defeating St. Cloud State for the North Central Region title.

The 2003 season marks the fourth consecutive year the Bison have entered the NCC tournament as the top-seeded team.

First round of the double-elimination NCC tournament (see attached bracket) gets underway at 9 a.m. Friday.

Here are the first round match-ups:

Friday, May 2

9 a.m.
#8 South Dakota St. (25-30) vs. #9 North Dakota (15-28)

11 a.m. #1 North Dakota St. (35-6) vs. SDSU/UND winner #2 Nebraska-Omaha (37-8) vs. #7 Northern Colorado (16-19)

1 p.m. #4 Augustana (41-17) vs. #5 Minnesota St. (31-16-1) #3 St. Cloud St. (37-14) vs. #6 South Dakota (30-24)

The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at Caswell Park. A second championship game, if needed, will be played at 7 p.m.

The tournament features four nationally-ranked teams (through rankings of April 22) with No. 3 North Dakota State, No. 11 Nebraska-Omaha, No. 23 Minnesota State and No. 25 Augustana.
